Concept

  • Acorns helps users save and invest spare change from their everyday purchases and invest into a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds
  • Investors can invest either their spare change from daily purchases or a lump sum:
    • Round up spare change: Acorns rounds up the spare change from everyday purchases to the nearest dollar, and moves the difference from investors’ checking account into an Acorns investment account. That amount of money is then automatically invested into a diversified portfolio recommended specifically for each investors.
    • Deposit a lump sum: if investors want to invest more and sooner, they can deposit a lump sum or set up recurring investments
  • Based on the Modern Portfolio Theory, Acorns suggests and optimizes five types of diversified portfolios, from conservative to aggressive,  according to investors’ risk-aversion levels
